SEO & Toxic Web Servers

Today I talk about something that I don’t think anyone else really discusses. In all the SEO books and studying that I’ve done over the last 15 years, I haven’t come across somethings that I noticed while working with my customers.

I wonder if you’ve ever thought about who else you’re sharing your web server with?

Now, I’ll give you an example of a lot of people, they have trouble ranking online in search results and they can’t figure out why they’ve done everything that the experts say they’re supposed to do. But, for some reason they’re just not able to budge their listing in search results. And here’s a strong possibility. It’s a likely situation that they’re sharing a server with thousands and thousands of other sites. For example, they’re with GoDaddy or 1&1, Wix, BlueHost or Media Temple or somebody who has millions of clients and they pack them all onto a few servers.

Now think about that in terms of the search engines? It really sends them a signal that you’re not really a large business, right? They’re looking at you and saying, Oh, this is one of a million people that are using this service. And you’re going to have a hard time standing out. Right? There’s also another possbile situation.

Let’s say that you’re sharing the web server with a site that’s not very reputable or you know, maybe there’s a morality issue with that site. So for example, let’s say that you’re a religious bookstore and you’re trying to show up in Google, but you’re a website that’s sharing space on a server that also sells pornography. There’s a conflict there and the search engines are going to see that and you’re not. So it’s something for you to consider and research.

Just like you would have traffic on the street. Let’s say that your two businesses are side by side. So you’ve got a store that sells religious products and then right next door as an adult bookstore. Well, how do you think that would affect the customers coming into the doors of either business? It would really be a problem, right? Well, this is something that people really don’t talk about and people don’t look at on the internet.

When you’re hosting your website, you really want to do a search and find out who else is on your web server, because that other website could directly be affecting your search results. It’s something that you may never have considered, and most experts don’t even know about this.
